- Purpura, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic
- SYMPTOMS. There will be bleeding of the nose and small purplish-red spots
- that are caused by bleeding into the skin. Spots turn into black-and-blue
- marks. There may be bleeding in the urinary or gastrointestinal tract.
- CAUSES. The cause of this disease is not known but it results from the
- spleen too rapidly removing platelets from the blood. Platelets are small
- bodies in the blood that prevent bleeding. A purpura that is similar and has
- same symptoms may result from use of quindine, quinine or chlorothiazide. It
- may also come from an infection such as measles. It will disappear when the
- use of drug stops or the infection is gone.
- TREATMENT. At times the disorder disappears on its own.
- .Your doctor may prescribe medication to increase platelets/reduce bleeding.
- .If the disorder is severe, surgery may be required.
